EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Major cities around the world are experiencing rising temperatures linked to climate change and the replacement of green spaces with asphalt and buildings. Intertropical cities are also experiencing an increase in heat waves, which can have serious consequences for vulnerable populations. Heatstroke is the result of these heat waves on the human body, and its effects range from dehydration to heart attacks. Mexico City has reported an increase in heat waves, but at the same time, its green spaces—which can act as thermal buffers against climate change—have decreased. This proposal will evaluate the effect of green spaces on heatstroke-related illnesses in two regions covered by Mexico City’s Special Green Infrastructure Program. The study will adopt an open science framework, incorporating public consultation with mayors, municipalities, native neighborhoods, and resident indigenous communities. The results can be used to identify critical vulnerability hotspots and plan health services to address and prevent these conditions.
