How we work

Science Program

The IAI Science Program is based on the Institute’s broad Scientific Agenda and aims to fulfill the IAI’s mission. It stems from a strategy of integrating the natural and social sciences, in a significant interdisciplinary effort to provide useful scientific information to decision-makers and policymakers in the Americas working in areas related to global change.

Capacity Building

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) has been at the forefront of strengthening science diplomacy and innovation capacities in the Americas through a series of initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration among policymakers, researchers, and institutions. The Science Diplomacy Center, inaugurated in 2023, is contributing to the creation of transdisciplinary networks, innovative funding mechanisms, and structured training for professionals working at the science-policy interface in the region. Its flagship program, the Science Technology Policy (STeP) Fellowship, supports the provision of specialized scientific advice to policymakers for the design of public policies relevant to global environmental change.

Belmont Forum

Since 2018, the IAI has hosted the Belmont Forum, a partnership of funding organizations, international scientific councils, and regional consortia committed to advancing transdisciplinary science. Please see the Notification on the hosting of the Belmont Forum Secretariat by the IAI Directorate.
