New free online course: “A transdisciplinary approach to the future of the oceans”

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), in collaboration with the Belmont Forum and the Center for Climate Science and Resilience (CR2), announces the launch of a self-paced, certificate-based online course entitled “A transdisciplinary approach to the future of the oceans.”

“The ocean connects us all, across continents, cultures, and generations. This course is a call to action for scientists, decision-makers, and civil society to come together to learn, collaborate, and create solutions. We hope it will contribute to shaping an inclusive and transformative ocean agenda,” says Anna Stewart-Ibarra, Executive Director of the IAI.

Focus and content

The course is aimed at professionals, researchers, and decision-makers interested in strengthening capacities for the sustainable management of marine-coastal ecosystems.

The proposal promotes the co-production of knowledge and dialogue between local and scientific knowledge, preparing participants to face the ocean challenges of the 21st century with a critical and transformative approach.

On behalf of the IAI, Omar López, Director of the Science Program, and Larisse Faroni-Perez, IAI STeP Fellow and Coordinator of Multilateral Affairs and the Belmont Forum CRA Oceans 2, participated in the design.

The Belmont Forum, led by Nicole Arbour, highlights that the course provides practical tools for stakeholders interested in applying to Oceans 2: “‘A transdisciplinary look at the future of the oceans’ shares knowledge that enables ideas to be transformed into research proposals.”

The faculty includes specialists from CR2, the University of São Paulo, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, the University of Miami, and the University for Development (UDD).
