As an environmental microbiologist, Christina is passionate about promoting the use of sound science to improve our interactions with the environment. She was a Mitacs Canadian Science Policy fellow in the Office of the Chief Scientist at Natural Resources Canada, where she worked on various initiatives, including climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. During her postdoc at Pontificia Universidad Católica (Santiago, Chile), Christina studied microbial methane cycling in marine systems to better understand this understudied process and improve climate change modeling. Her PhD at the University of Calgary (Canada) characterized the microbial community structure of a subsurface oil reservoir to identify oil-degrading microorganisms, and her MASc at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada) studied the efficacy of using DNA markers to detect fecal pollution in agricultural watersheds. Ultimately, Christina hopes to leverage her scientific background to promote positive global change by supporting evidence-based decisions, particularly with respect to environmental policies.
