This part of nature is generally ignored, as global, regional, and local efforts focus on biodiversity. At the same time,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000382298\">minerals, rocks, fossils, lakes, rivers, soil or relief<\/a>, and even the events that transform these elements such as earthquakes or floods that provide habitat for all forms of life, do not garner similar attention. This is why it is essential to make society aware of the importance and care of geodiversity.<\/p>\n\n<p>Thanks to the work of the geological scientific community, geodiversity has gained interest in recent years, and Latin America is no stranger to the need to conserve the geoheritage. To protect, conserve, and raise awareness about the care of natural resources, UNESCO, together with different organizations created in 2017 the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geoparquebiobio.cl\/red-latinoamericana-de-geoparques\/\">UNESCO Global Geoparks Network for Latin America and the Caribbean<\/a>. Today, there are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/es\/geoparques-unesco-en-am%C3%A9rica-latina\/g-48970535\">\u00a07 geoparks in the region<\/a>: Araipe in Brazil, Grutas del Palacio in Uruguay, Comarca Minera in Mexico, Mixteca Alta in Mexico, Imbabura in Ecuador, Colca and Andagua Volcanoes in Peru and K\u00fctralkura in Chile. These geoparks also bring civil society closer to key areas of geological interest through geotourism.<\/p>\n\n<p>El Instituto Interamericano para la Investigaci\u00f3n del Cambio Global (IAI) organiz\u00f3 recientemente una\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iai.int\/es\/post\/detail\/Virtual-access-to-sessions-Science-Summit-78th-United-Nations-General-Assembly\">sesi\u00f3n en SSUNGA78<\/a>\u00a0(Cumbre Cient\u00edfica de la Asamblea General de la ONU) sobre la geodiversidad y su importancia en el r\u00edo Risaralda (Colombia).&#13;\nThe Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) recently held a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iai.int\/en\/post\/detail\/Virtual-access-to-sessions-Science-Summit-78th-United-Nations-General-Assembly\">session at SSUNGA78<\/a>\u00a0(Scientific Summit of the UN General Assembly) on geodiversity and its importance in the Risaralda River (Colombia).&#13;\nAt the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/days\/geodiversity\">41st UNESCO General Conference<\/a>\u00a0in 2021, October 6 was established as the International Geodiversity Day. This year, UNESCO&#8217;s will celebrate the day with the motto\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geodiversityday.org\/post\/geodiversity-is-for-everyone-theme-announced-for-igd-2023\">&#8220;Geodiversity is for Everyone&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and the organization of more than 250 events worldwide.
