Para lograr una gesti&#xF3;n efectiva de las fuentes de agua amenazadas en muchas de las regiones monta&#xF1;osas de las Am&#xE9;ricas es necesario contar con mejores datos. Este proyecto examina los ciclos hidrol&#xF3;gicos de varias cuencas de Bolivia, Chile y Argentina, as&#xED; como de la Cordillera Occidental de Am&#xE9;rica del Norte.&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;&lt;br \/&gt;&#10;&lt;strong&gt;Objetivos&lt;\/strong&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Conseguir y validar datos clim&#xE1;ticos y de caudales de los &#xFA;ltimos 300 a&#xF1;os e identificar las causas de su variabilidad.&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Documentar y modelar la reducci&#xF3;n de los glaciares y el modo en que &#xE9;sta altera el flujo aguas abajo.&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Evaluar c&#xF3;mo impactan los cambios en la provisi&#xF3;n de agua en la econom&#xED;a y los medios de vida; identificar su significado para la gesti&#xF3;n del agua en el futuro, en t&#xE9;rminos de pol&#xED;ticas e instituciones.&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;&lt;br \/&gt;&#10;&lt;strong&gt;Primeros resultados&lt;\/strong&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;La variaci&#xF3;n a largo plazo observada en un registro dendrocronol&#xF3;gico de 700 a&#xF1;os permiti&#xF3; reconstruir la variabilidad de la precipitaci&#xF3;n en los Andes altos. Un importante per&#xED;odo de sequ&#xED;a, ocurrido en el siglo XIV tuvo impactos sociales cr&#xED;ticos: los poblados preincaicos abiertos y ubicados en las tierras bajas fueron abandonados en favor de sitios fortificados, con evidencia de guerras locales que comenzaron durante los a&#xF1;os m&#xE1;s secos, seg&#xFA;n el registro de anchos de anillos de &#xE1;rboles (1314-1315); m&#xE1;s adelante en el mismo siglo hubo otras dos sequ&#xED;as.&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;En los &#xFA;ltimos 100 a&#xF1;os se observa una suave tendencia de disminuci&#xF3;n regional de los caudales en Chile, as&#xED; como dos importantes cambios en el r&#xE9;gimen clim&#xE1;tico: en 1945 la precipitaci&#xF3;n anual promedio cay&#xF3; un 31%, para recuperarse (un 28%) reci&#xE9;n en 1977. Estas variaciones repentinas coinciden con los conocidos cambios en la circulaci&#xF3;n atmosf&#xE9;rica del Pac&#xED;fico Norte (la Oscilaci&#xF3;n Decenal del Pac&#xED;fico). Las oscilaciones que se esperan en el futuro, superpuestas a la tendencia de disminuci&#xF3;n de la precipitaci&#xF3;n puede tener fuerte impacto en la disponibilidad de agua.&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;En algunas zonas cr&#xED;ticas, la adaptaci&#xF3;n al cambio global ser&#xE1; m&#xE1;s apremiante y desafiante que en otras. Un &#xED;ndice de severidad de sequ&#xED;as para los Andes australes (35.5&#xB0;-39.5&#xB0;S), por ejemplo, indica un mayor riesgo de sequ&#xED;a para 1920-2002 que para el registro reconstruido de 1346-1919.
