Thematic session held as part of the 34th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI)<\/p>\n\n

This session is organized in collaboration with the Government of Jamaica, the Government of Colombia, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM),\u00a0the University of the West Indies (UWI), and\u00a0the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

The event aims to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0a dialogue among member countries of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research and regional partners on strategic approaches to strengthening scientific cooperation in the Americas and the Caribbean, and to explore opportunities for developing collaborative infrastructures and digital climate intelligence capabilities that can support climate research, risk assessment, and evidence-based decision-making across the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

The discussion will also consider how enhanced regional cooperation can contribute to greater scientific autonomy, promote sustainable financing for climate research, and strengthen the long-term resilience of scientific institutions and knowledge networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

The\u00a0Americas\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0are\u00a0increasingly\u00a0exposed\u00a0to\u00a0accelerating\u00a0climate\u00a0risks,\u00a0including\u00a0intensifying\u00a0hurricanes,\u00a0droughts,\u00a0heatwaves, sea-level\u00a0rise,\u00a0ecosystem\u00a0degradation, and\u00a0growing\u00a0socio-economic\u00a0losses.\u00a0These\u00a0impacts\u00a0are\u00a0particularly\u00a0critical\u00a0for\u00a0vulnerable\u00a0regions,\u00a0including\u00a0Small Island\u00a0Developing\u00a0States\u00a0(SIDS),\u00a0where\u00a0climate\u00a0variability\u00a0and extremes pose\u00a0significant\u00a0threats\u00a0to\u00a0sustainable\u00a0development,\u00a0food\u00a0security,\u00a0infrastructure, and\u00a0ecosystems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

At\u00a0the\u00a0same\u00a0time,\u00a0the\u00a0global\u00a0landscape\u00a0of\u00a0climate\u00a0science\u00a0cooperation\u00a0is\u00a0evolving.\u00a0Political\u00a0shifts\u00a0and\u00a0declining\u00a0support\u00a0for\u00a0multilateral\u00a0climate\u00a0initiatives\u00a0in\u00a0some\u00a0countries\u00a0have\u00a0begun\u00a0to\u00a0affect\u00a0the\u00a0stability\u00a0of\u00a0international\u00a0research\u00a0partnerships\u00a0and\u00a0financing.\u00a0These\u00a0developments\u00a0highlight\u00a0the\u00a0importance\u00a0of\u00a0strengthening\u00a0regional\u00a0scientific\u00a0cooperation\u00a0mechanisms\u00a0that\u00a0allow\u00a0countries\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0Americas\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0to\u00a0sustain\u00a0research\u00a0capacities,\u00a0enhance\u00a0knowledge\u00a0production, and\u00a0ensure\u00a0continuity\u00a0in\u00a0climate\u00a0science\u00a0collaboration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Advances in Earth system science, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and digital data infrastructures also offer new opportunities to transform how climate risks are\u00a0monitored, understood, and managed. Leveraging these innovations through regional collaboration can contribute to more effective early warning systems, improved climate risk intelligence, and stronger science-policy interfaces.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

    Advancing regional capacities to understand and quantify climate hazards, including extreme events,\u00a0attribution of\u00a0science, and emerging systemic risks.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    • Digital Climate Intelligence and Data Cooperation\u00a0
      Strengthening regional collaboration in climate data sharing, artificial intelligence applications, high-performance computing, and climate information platforms that support early warning systems and decision-support tools.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

      Across\u00a0these discussions, particular emphasis will be placed on strengthening science\u2013policy interfaces and regional governance mechanisms, as well as exploring sustainable financing pathways and enhancing regional research capacity. These cross-cutting dimensions will inform all thematic areas, supporting more integrated, actionable, and regionally coordinated approaches to climate resilience across the Americas and the Caribbean.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
