The ocean connects us: new virtual course to transform your future

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), in collaboration with the Belmont Forum and the Center for Climate and Resilience Science (CR2), announces the launch of the self-paced, certified virtual course “A Transdisciplinary Perspective for the Future of Oceans.”

“The ocean connects us all—beyond continents, cultures, and generations. This course is a call to action for scientists, decision-makers, and civil society to come together to learn, collaborate, and create solutions collectively. We hope it contributes to shaping an inclusive and transformative ocean agenda,” says Anna Stewart-Ibarra, Executive Director of the IAI.

The goal of this course is to strengthen capacities for the sustainable management of marine-coastal ecosystems. Through nine modules, participants will address key topics such as climate change and oceans, biodiversity, the blue economy, governance, environmental justice, data for territorial planning, and international agendas. The program promotes knowledge co-production and dialogue between local and scientific perspectives, preparing participants to face 21st-century ocean challenges with a critical and transformative approach.

The course design involved Omar López, Director of the IAI Science Program, and Larisse Faroni-Perez, STeP Fellow and Coordinator of Multilateral Affairs and the Belmont Forum CRA Oceans 2 call. Oceans 2 is the research funding call for interdisciplinary projects open until March 5, 2026. According to Nicole Arbour, Executive Director of the Belmont Forum, “this course provides practical tools for stakeholders interested in applying to Oceans 2, sharing knowledge that helps turn ideas into research proposals.”

The faculty includes specialists from CR2, University of São Paulo, Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, University of Miami, and Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD). The content combines conceptual foundations with case studies, practical exercises, and tools to design interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects with real impact on ocean sustainability.
