IAI Training Institute on the use of seasonal climate predictions for applications in Latin America

The Training Institute was hosted by the School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (FCEN/UBA) in Argentina, in collaboration with the IAI and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI). The Training Institute was funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) through the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Co-sponsors were the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and UNESCO´s International Hydrological Programme (PHI).

Overall objective

The overall objective of this training institute was to increase local and regional capacity on the use of seasonal prediction tailored to user needs in different socioeconomic sectors (agriculture, health, water resources, disaster risk reduction, etc) of Latin America. The course consisted of two weeks of lectures, seminars, discussions and practical exercises.

Main topics

1) From global to regional seasonal predictions;
2) Translating science into applied knowledge to inform decision making;
3) Use of climate information: Experiences and needs in the sectors of disaster risk reduction, agriculture, water management, and health

Thirty-eight participants from 13 Latin American countries attended the workshop.
