The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), Mercosur’s Intergovernmental Commission for Environmental Health and Labor, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) were pleased to organize this Training Institute.
The Training Institute was open to climate and health professionals, particularly from the Mercosur region, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The Training Institute was funded by the IAI with resources from the US National Science Foundation (NSF). Co-sponsors were Uruguay´s Ministry of Health and the National Meteorological Service, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) and Canada´s International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
Course description
The two-week course was designed to increase awareness, understanding, and the ability to manage climate-related impacts on health. The course improved local and regional capacity to use climate information for health-related interventions in Mercosur countries. This activity contributed to the Mercosur Strategy to Protect Human Health from Climate Change, agreed by Ministers of Health in 2009.
The course involved lectures, exercises, and final projects. The lectures were geared toward a progressive understanding of climate. Participants also learned practical methods for integrating climate knowledge and information into health related decision-making processes; they improved their ability to understand, anticipate, and mitigate the impacts of climate in the health sector and develop proposal-writing skills.
Training Institute Seed Grant Program
The training course also addressed proposal preparation and the grant administration of international projects. Participants developed multinational and multidisciplinary project proposals in the course. Grants were awarded to successful proposals, under the Training Institute Seed Grant Program (TISG-II).
TISG-II is an impact assessment activity. It funded seed projects arising from the Training Institute on Climate and Health.
TISG objectives are: 1) to further encourage network building; 2) to promote the application of the training provided on pressing real-world issues that have a significant global environmental change dimension; 3) to foster multinational and multidisciplinary collaboration; 4) to develop proposal writing skills; 5) to develop and strengthen management capacity for international grants; 6) to increase the participation of small countries in IAI research program.
