Workshop Topic: Science Diplomacy & Innovation for Global Environmental Change in the Americas

Date: 8-10th November 2024

Objectives

The IAI Science Diplomacy Center and the University of São Paulo (USP) have developed a Science Diplomacy and Innovation Curriculum grounded in case studies from across the Americas. To maximize its impact, the curriculum is structured in two interconnected yet standalone parts:

  • Online Course – A foundational introduction to key concepts in Science Diplomacy and Innovation.
  • In-Person Workshops – Interactive workshops designed to deepen learning and be customized to meet specific stakeholder needs.

The main objective of this workshop is to present the course and gather feedback to refine both the online and in-person components. This input will support the development of tailored, engaging in-person events for stakeholders, strengthening collaboration throughout the Americas.

It also aims to connect current and former STeP fellows to build a science diplomacy community and foster valuable networking opportunities.

Workshop Content

This workshop presents the IAI Science Diplomacy and Innovation Curriculum through a mix of interactive classes and simulation games focused on key topics:

  • Science Diplomacy – The role of science in supporting international collaboration and decision-making.
  • Innovation Diplomacy – How diplomacy promotes scientific and technological advances for sustainable development.
  • Negotiation – Core negotiation concepts for addressing complex scientific and environmental issues.
  • Global Environmental Change – Insights into environmental challenges affecting the Americas.

The simulation games allow participants to apply these concepts in real-world scenarios, fostering skills in negotiation, collaboration, and science diplomacy strategy. This hands-on approach encourages feedback to refine the curriculum and support tailored, impactful training for diverse stakeholders across the Americas.
