Before joining the IAI, Dr. López Alfano was the Technical Secretary of the National Research System (SNI) at the National Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation (SENACYT) in Panama, where he played a key role in the implementation of public science policies, knowledge dissemination, and the recognition of scientific productivity to consolidate a critical mass of researchers in the country.

Previously, he was a researcher at the Institute for Scientific Research and High Technology Services (INDICASAT AIP) and an associate researcher at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). He also served as a faculty member in the Department of Botany at the University of Panama, where he supervised undergraduate and graduate students from different countries.
