The IAI Directorate participates in the G20 Research and Innovation Working Group in Brazil

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) participated in the 3rd Meeting of the G20 Research and Innovation Working Group, held from May 22 to 24 in Recife. Representing the Belmont Forum as a scientific partner, the IAI Directorate presented an overview of the upcoming Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action on Tropical Forests, addressing global implications and urgent actions. This project is led by the IAI in partnership with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).

Laila Sandroni, Transdisciplinary Program Lead

The meeting, organized by Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação - MCTI), provided a platform for the IAI to strengthen its ties with other multilateral organizations such as GBIF and ACTO. Additionally, it allowed for discussions with G20 member states and invited countries on international transdisciplinary collaboration, aiming to foster solutions to global environmental change. The IAI and the Belmont Forum expressed their gratitude to the Brazilian G20 presidency for the invitation as knowledge partners in 2024.

The event took place at the Cais do Sertão Cultural Center and featured the participation of the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Luciana Santos; the Governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra; and the Mayor of Recife, João Campos. During the three days of deliberations, more than 40 delegations from G20 member countries, invited guests, and international organizations discussed crucial topics such as the democratization of science, Amazon preservation, biodiversity, energy transition, pandemic control, and policies to promote diversity.
