"How Climate Change Affects Life on Earth: A Summary for Everyone" is the first summary of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II Sixth Assessment Report made available to the public in Spanish by the IAI. The document synthesizes the widespread and severe effects of climate change on both nature and people worldwide.
Extreme phenomena such as heatwaves, wildfires, and droughts are increasingly intensified and have become more common due to human activity. Some impacts are already irreversible, such as species extinction and glacier loss, which are critical as a water source for millions of people. For example, it is estimated that the global sustainable potential for marine fish and shellfish catches has decreased by 4.1% between 1930 and 2010 due to ocean warming. However, other human activities, such as overfishing, have also been decisive. On land, subsistence farmers often lose their crops due to irregular rainfall patterns.
This summary also explains how climate change affects the poorest people and least developed regions most due to their lower capacity to adapt and cope with its effects. Climate change does not act in isolation but interacts with and amplifies other social, economic, and environmental risks, posing additional challenges to mitigation and adaptation efforts. In conclusion, immediate action is essential to adapt to current climate changes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid future risks.
