On the Potential Impact of Carbon Dioxide Removal

Initiatives such as carbon dioxide removal and solar radiation modification are garnering attention in our region, especially with the recent report analyzing the potential impact of carbon removal. In response to this, the IAI is planning a regional workshop in partnership with the SRM Governance Initiative and the  C2G (Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative). Discussions are currently ongoing with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) on a joint meeting between our organizations.

 ECLAC and Fundación Torcuato Di Tella (FTDT), with support from C2G, have been working on knowledge products, tools and awareness raising activities to enhance the capacity of decision-makers in Latin America and the Caribbean to consider the integration of large-scale carbon dioxide removal approaches (nature-based to technology-based) in recovery measures, national long term development strategies and Nationally Determined Contributions under United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The systematic approach and related tools under development, aim to help analyze the impact (positive or negative) on the achievement of national SDGs, GDP, investment, employment, and the reduction of emissions. In addition to a comprehensive report , and the video companion (in Spanish) of its presentation, ECLAC and FTDT are working on the development of an assessment tool that will allow policy makers to make projections based on their national context. This will be followed by workshops tailored to the technical teams supporting decision makers in regional ministries of environment, planning, finance, and others, as well as non-state actors to support informed decision-making related to carbon dioxide removal.

C2G has also been working with ECLAC and the Regional Platform LEDS LAC to develop regional webinars on carbon dioxide removal and solar radiation modification, and makes its events, publications and videos available in Spanish and French.
