The Belmont Forum announces an open invitation to participate in a series of international workshops aimed at defining transdisciplinary research priorities in relation to the Ocean Decade Challenges. This effort seeks to lay the groundwork for the new Collaborative Research Action (CRA) called Oceans 2, which will be launched in 2025 during the United Nations Ocean Conference.
The first workshop will take place on 14 August, from 11:30 to 13:30, UTC-3 (10:30 to 12:30 EST / 07:30 to 09:30 PDT) as part of the 20th Latin American Congress of Marine Sciences (Colacmar 2024) in Itajaí, Brazil. The event will be held in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation, and will also provide simultaneous translation in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The collaboration with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, led by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, supports this global effort.
The Collaborative Research Action / Oceans 2 aims to coordinate international projects with a transdisciplinary focus, centered on marine biodiversity and the socio-ecosystems that depend on the oceans, to mitigate and adapt to global environmental change and achieve global well-being by 2050. This initiative aligns with the theme "the science we need for the ocean we want" of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
The workshops are aimed at a wide audience, including researchers, decision-makers, funding institutions, NGOs, indigenous peoples, traditional communities, youth, women, and the ocean-related business sector. Participants will work together to identify research gaps and define ocean priorities.
