Experts identify research priorities in the Amazon and tropical forests

On July 28th and 29th, experts, researchers, civil society leaders, local government officials, representatives of small producers, and Indigenous Peoples' leaders from the Amazon region and tropical forests gathered in Leticia, Colombia, to discuss the research needs of member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO). This meeting was organized under the leadership of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI - www.iai.int) and the São Paulo Research Foundation from Brazil (FAPESP - https://fapesp.br).
The workshop titled "Local Engagement and Co-production of Knowledge for the Amazon and Tropical Forests" received support from important institutions, including the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Biological Resources Research, the SINCHI Institute for Biological Resources Research, and the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America (SALSA).
The purpose of this workshop is to enrich research projects that are essential for decision-makers in the Amazonian region and tropical forests worldwide. The working meetings involved participants from different sectors with the objective of generating a comprehensive perspective on the problems and their solutions. The information collected contribute to defining the scope of an upcoming call for Collaborative Research Action by the Belmont Forum (www.belmontforum.org).
By consolidating different research-funding agencies worldwide, the Belmont Forum plays a crucial role in strengthening collaboration among diverse institutions. Its upcoming research call will focus precisely on the complex challenges faced by the Amazon region and the world's tropical forests.
