Carlos Joly, former member of the IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (2017), has just won the Fundação Conrado Wessel (FCW) Prize in Science, whose theme was “Climate, Environment and Biodiversity”. Awarded for the last time in 2014, the FCW Prize for Science has been awarded again in 2022 to recognize a personality that contributes to scientific or technological development in Brazil.
Joly is a botanist and professor emeritus at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and coordinator of the Biota-FAPESP program, which has been in operation for more than 20 years and is dedicated to mapping animal and plant species in the state of São Paulo and Brazil. Biota-FAPESP encompasses around 300 projects, between those that have been completed and those that are still in progress, and articulates the work of 1,200 researchers. Joly is also one of the coordinators of the Brazilian Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES) and a member of the Multidisciplinary Panel of Specialists of the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
The jury that chose Joly includes prestigious Brazilian scientists such as Helena Nader (Brazilian Academy of Sciences, ABC), Glaucius Oliva (University of São Paulo, USP), Luiz Davidovich (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ) , Marcello Barcinski (UFRJ and USP), Marcelo Knobel (Unicamp), Marco Antonio Zago (FAPESP), Marta Teixeira (USP), Soraya Smaili (Federal University of São Paulo, Unifesp) and Admiral Paulo Cesar Demby Correa (Brazilian Navy).
The qualities that are considered to bestow the award include: innovative talent, leadership, social reach, tireless work, integrity and ethics. The researcher will receive the tribute at a ceremony scheduled for October this year, in the capital of the state of São Paulo.
