The ENSO Winter School 2025 aims to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of researchers in El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Through a dynamic and immersive learning experience, students will be equipped with knowledge of the fundamental dynamics of ENSO through a hierarchical modeling approach and will gain the practical skills needed to advance ENSO theory, prediction, and applications. The goal is to train the next generation of leaders in ENSO research, dedicated to advancing scientific understanding and addressing the challenges surrounding the response of ENSO to climate change and its complex impacts on global weather and climate.

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (www.iai.int) will fund a scholarship for a student from an eligible Latin American and Caribbean country who is interested in the dynamics or impacts of the El Nino phenomenon and transdisciplinary research. The scholarship includes travel, lodging, meals and registration.

Interested researchers are encouraged to apply to the course through the link. Applicants who state they need a scholarship to attend will be considered as candidates but only one scholarship will be provided.

IAI scholarship eligibility:

  • Applicants who have not completed at least two years of graduate-level studies may be eligible with justification of their background in ocean and atmospheric dynamics.
  • Background in fundamental ocean and atmospheric dynamics is required.
  • Students from institutions where formal instruction on the ENSO phenomenon is not regularly offered are encouraged to apply.
