Workshop Content & Thematic Areas
The “Science Diplomacy Workshop for Estuaries and Mangroves in the Americas: Building Bridges between Science and Sustainable Public Policies” will focus on priority environmental issues. Science diplomacy will be highlighted as a crucial mechanism to strengthen regional collaboration and to develop and implement scientific and innovation initiatives that promote sustainable public policies. Therefore, invitations to attend this event have been extended to government officials of Panama and members of the diplomatic corps residing in the country to attend the event. Thematic areas to be addressed include:
- Marine biodiversity
- Estuaries, mangroves, and oceans
- The workshop content will include a field visit to Coiba National Park, allowing participants to directly observe ecosystems central to the discussions
Objectives
Overall, the event aims to enhance collaboration between scientists and policymakers to promote sustainable management of estuaries and mangroves. Four specific objectives were designed:
- Promote the training of government officials, scientists, and other experts in science diplomacy.
- Foster the consolidation of a regional transdisciplinary research group on science diplomacy and estuarine science, using COIBA AIP as the initial study site in Panama. (This group should be able to address relevant issues, providing knowledge and recommendations for sustainable national and regional public policies.)
- Contribute to public policy recommendations for the management and preservation of estuarine and mangrove biodiversity in the Americas.
- Contribute to the development of regional capacities for the study and implementation of public policies aimed at the conservation of estuaries and mangroves through the execution of the regional action plan.
