This white paper highlights the critical importance of estuaries and mangroves in Central and South America, emphasizing their role in biodiversity, climate regulation, and coastal protection. These ecosystems, which are essential for carbon capture and climate change mitigation, face threats such as climate change, pollution, and urbanization.

Based on a science diplomacy workshop held in Panama in 2024, recommendations are offered for public policies focused on the conservation and restoration of these habitats. It proposes implementing programs for conservation, biodiversity monitoring, water management, pollution reduction, and protection of vulnerable species.

In addition, it highlights the need for sustainable activities, investment in research, public education, and inclusive governance, as well as cross-border cooperation and the active participation of local communities.

Recommendations for a science diplomacy strategy for the safeguarding of the Amazon

Julian Prieto, Luz Milbeth Cumba Garcia, Luisa F. Echeverría-King, Claudia Alarcón-López, Susan Benavides

The present white paper outlines a comprehensive strategy for the conservation of the Amazon through science diplomacy and innovation diplomacy. It addresses the critical situation of this vital region, highlighting its ecological and cultural importance.

This document is the result of a methodology based on two participatory processes, the first being a collaborative exercise within the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI) and the second a focus group with experts in scientific diplomacy from Latin America, along with literature analysis.

As a result, they propose a series of practical and feasible recommendations grouped into four categories: 1) transboundary cooperation, 2) strengthening a joint monitoring platform, 3) establishing a Science-Policy Hub, and 4) capacity development.
