The article discusses the relevance of functionalist, structuralist and transitional perspectives on population mobility to explain settlement planning strategies in the Brazilian Amazon, particularly through the "Urbanismo Rural" in the 1960s and 1970s. It concludes that these perspectives are insufficient to explain the settlement process in the Amazon, and that this explanation would require the use of pluralistic approaches on population mobility.
