The spatial and temporal evolution of two shallow lakes (Paso de las Piedras and La Picasa) distributed along a Pampas region was studied. The study period was 1981-2012. Reanalysis model (NCEP/NCAR) and in situ meteorological data were used. Furthermore, satellite images were processed to calculate the area of each lake (LANDSAT 5, 7 and 8). The occurrence of extreme events was studied by the Quintiles and Normal methods. Regression analysis was used to compare Reanalysis data and in situ. The results showed significant temporal and spatial differences. Paso de las Piedras lake area presented an increase of 1.1 km2 in a very wet year (2005) compared with a normal one (2002). Meanwhile the Picasa Lake presented an increase of 174.9 km2. This difference shows the magnitude of the precipitation variability of the study region.
