The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), in collaboration with the Belmont Forum and the Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2), announces the launch of the self-paced, certificate-based, online course “A Transdisciplinary Approach to the Future of the Oceans,” designed to build capacity in the sustainable management of coastal marine ecosystems.
This program, consisting of nine modules, integrates science, policy, and society to address ocean challenges in the context of global change. Participants will explore topics such as climate threats, multilevel governance, marine conservation, the blue economy, environmental justice, and emerging technologies through real-world case studies, collaborative work, and practical exercises.
To register for the course for free, visit: IAI Transdisciplinary Academy on our Virtual Campus.
The course is aimed at professionals, researchers, and decision-makers, with the goal of promoting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects that contribute to more equitable and sustainable public policies. Highlights of the course content include:
- Global change and the ocean: meteorological threats and adaptation strategies.
- Ocean-biodiversity-climate nexus: ecosystem services and blue carbon.
- Ocean governance: inclusion of indigenous knowledge and multilevel cooperation.
- Blue economy: opportunities and risks for social justice.
- Technology and data: open science and geospatial tools.
With a critical and transformative approach, the course promotes the co-production of knowledge and dialogue between local and scientific knowledge, preparing participants to face the challenges of the ocean in the 21st century.
Instructors include Laura Ramajo, Martín Jacques, Ana María Ugarte, Bárbara Morales, María Ignacia Silva, Laura Farías, Pilar Moraga, Francisca Muñoz, and Noelia Carrasco from CR2, as well as Alexander Turra from the University of São Paulo, Miguel Cifuentes-Jara from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Daniel Suman from the University of Miami, and Alex Godoy from the University for Development (UDD).

About the organizers:
The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is a regional intergovernmental organization that brings together 19 member countries from across the Americas around a simple premise: when science, policy, and society work together, the region is better prepared to navigate the response to the challenges of global environmental change. Since its inception, the IAI has promoted scientific excellence, open data, and international cooperation as pillars of informed decision-making.
The Center for Climate Science and Resilience CR2 is made up of researchers from the social and natural sciences, whose main purpose is to generate research on climate science and resilience from an interdisciplinary approach, and to study how climate change impacts ecosystems and Chilean society. The Belmont Forum is an association of funding organizations, international scientific councils, and regional consortia committed to advancing transdisciplinary science. The new Collaborative Research Action on Oceans, Ocean 2, will accept applications until March 5, 2026, at https://belmontforum.org/archives/open-opportunity/ocean-2.
