Dr. Balvanera is a professor at the Center for Ecosystem Research (CIEcO), of the National University of Mexico (UNAM) in Morelia. She researches the links between biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being, with emphasis on ecosystem services from tropical secondary forests and tradeoffs between ecosystem services at different spatial scales. She has lead several interdisciplinary research projects on ecosystem services at the national, watershed and landscape scale. She teaches courses on ecosystem services, social-ecological systems and sustainability for undergraduate and graduate students. She is an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow, lead of a global monitoring program on ecosystem services (GEOBON-ES), of a Mexican research network (Red de Socioecosistemas y Sustentabilidad).
